Date:
named in March 24, 1936, after a short vote from all of the members of the lowell observatory, in which they chose from Minerva, Cronus, or Pluto. Pluto won unanimously.
Mickey Mouse’s dog, Pluto, was created the same year Pluto’s name was decided, and was named after the “planet”. The element plutonium is also named after Pluto.
Since its “demotion” from planet to dwarf planet “134340” was added to its name, so its formal name is now 134340 Pluto.
Pluto has 5 moons: Nix (its name coming from the Greek goddess of darkness and night), hydra (named after the monster that guarded the underworld in Green Mythology), Kerberos (another underworld monster), Styx (a very important river in Greek mythology) and Charon, the largest. Charon was a boatman in Greek mythology who would cross people’s souls across the river acheron to the underworld.
