Demonstrative Adjectives
• The pronouns this, that, these and those can also be used as adjectives when they modify a noun. Demonstrative adjectives will designate a specific noun.
• Demonstrative adjectives will also establish a distance from the speaker. This is used for singular nouns when someone or something is nearby. That is used for singular nouns when someone or something is far away.
These is used for plural nouns when someone or something is nearby. Those is used for plural nouns when someone or something is far away.
Examples:
The demonstrative adjective this will modify the singular noun rainbow
THIS rainbow bridge was guarded by Heimdal.
The demonstrative adjective that will modify the singular noun night
THAT night, while he was sleeping, the soldiers of the King came to arrest him. The demonstrative adjective these will modify the plural noun women
THESE women rode on magnificent white steeds that resembled clouds at sunrise. The demonstrative adjective those will modify the plural noun swords
THOSE swords need to be stored in a safe place.
• Don´t confuse demonstrative adjectives with demonstrative pronouns. Remember the pronouns will take the place of a noun and the adjectives need the noun to modify it.
This amused the gods. (Demonstrative pronoun)
