called Oceanus. The voyage was not easy; they encountered several storms and cross winds, and of course people got sea sick. After all that, they arrived to a port now known as Cape Cod.
Winter was coming and they knew they needed to prepare. They decided to go to Plymouth Beach.
But the pilgrims were not the only people living in America. Different tribes (Native Americans) had been there for hundreds of years before them.
The winter was hard on the pilgrims; many died and others got sick. Another big problem was that they didn’t have enough food.
Native Americans were not very happy with the settlers; they thought they did not know how to respect their land. But they later helped them plant corn, fish, and hunt. They also taught them the most important lesson of all, to respect the land.
In the spring of 1621 the chief of the tribe and the pilgrims signed an agreement which declared peace between them.
In that same year the pilgrims wanted to celebrate their harvest and decided to invite their new friends. It is believed the festivity lasted three days.
They ate not only turkey like we do today, but also meat, fish, corn, berries, and nuts. They also celebrated by playing games and dancing.
Thanksgiving became an official holiday in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln was president.
