With the start of 2020, we head into not only a new year but a new decade that brings many challenges. Without neglecting our yearly plans and resolutions, with this opportunity we must look years ahead in a world that is increasingly complex. We must aim to create: more equality -a hard task when the rich population are becoming more concentrated-; better education in developing countries -where politics speak of the topic but are not truly interested in having a more educated population-, better access to healthcare -where systems still fail in covering essential needs-, a better environment -although no one contributes-, less food waste -astonishing within a world where people are starving to death-, more use of reusable products, a better quality of life, and better living conditions for everyone. And if we aim towards that we can begin to address many topics that everyone should be paying attention to. The hard part is that we each feel as if it is someone else’s responsibility and out of
our control.
The international economy and politics enter this new year on alert with the seemingly official implementation of the Brexit and an expectant European economic community. On the other hand, with the President of the United States in the process of impeachment during a simultaneous presidential campaign, and with presumable certainty that nothing will change from his trial. Latin America is experiencing enormous instability where its peoples rightly claim many issues that have been denied for years, but this time financed by extreme left governments that receive strong economic support from the unfortunate drug trafficking plagues. The sad part is knowing that in reality, they have no intention of solving problems but only care about power by taking advantage of the disarray.
We are fortunate to live in Canada, to enjoy a growing economy, the multiculturalism that surrounds us, the beauty of nature and many other things. In a sea of cultures and people from more than 150 countries and we are all Canadians, we live together in order and law and respect religions and beliefs. We Canadians are the best example for the world of a market economy with a broad social policy far from the extremes and focused on being more efficient and environmentally responsible despite still having enormous challenges in this area.
My message is that hopefully in these next 10 years we, all, can be the activists of all these issues by doing simple things, but doing them together. Let's not think of huge and unattainable things, instead think of micromanagement, but multiplied by thousands. This is a true change. Choose your field and act! I started with Drawing Alegria to help low-income families and children born with malformations in their faces. This is only the beginning of helping the world by putting one grain of sand towards a better world.
