Organic Community Garden
People who like to garden but don’t have the space can sign up for a Park District garden
plot. Full-size plots are 10’ x 20’ and half-size plots are 10’ x 10’. Gardeners will be assigned a plot based on availability. Applications are available at Presence Inwood Athletic Club front desk. The garden is located on McDonough Street, across from Inwood Golf Course.
Learn to control weeds, pests, disease and other gardening troubles in a sustainable manner.
This class covers both the use of organic materials and the use of organic cultural practices. The class is not so much anti-chemical as it is pro gardening in an environmentally friendly manner.
Content includes an overview of gardening in co-operation with the ecosystem of the garden, ways to build soil tilth and richness, plant nutrition using organic fertilizers, ways to grow a garden that are naturally resistant to pests and disease, and ways to work with nature in correcting garden problems.

Learn the basics of organic gardening from Nancy Kuhajda, University of Illinois Extension Program Coordinator. Topics highlighted include: planning, soil, composting, disease management and more.

The tomato is the most popular home grown vegetable. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates there are 25,000 tomato varieties.
A juicy tomato is one of summer’s greatest simple pleasures. Information on site selection, soil preparation, planting, growing and supporting the plants, and common problems will be covered.

Enjoy a summer evening of sketching, inspired by the beautiful surroundings at the Joliet Park District Organic Community Garden. Observe and sketch plants, insects and birds in their natural habitat. Bring a lawn chair. Colored pencils, paper and clip boards provided. No art skills required, just an evening of fun and relaxation. Meet at the garden, located on McDonough Street, east of Mission Boulevard. In case of rain, an alternate date will
be chosen.
