Page 2 - Archeology and Microbiology
P. 2

For 3 consecutive weeks, 9th and 10th grade students from Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy attended two separate workshops at the American Museum of Natural History. The 9th graders attended the Intro to Microbiology workshop, while the 10th graders attended the Intro to Archaeology workshop. Intro to Microbiology students learned about the bacteria living in the world around them, and how quickly they can spread across a location. They were given a hands-on experience, swabbing for bacteria in places of their choice around the museum and observing the bacteria’s growth over the course of the three weeks. They also learned how to use research technology such as modern microscopes. The Intro to Archaeology workshop students were given an in-depth look into the life and discoveries of archaeologists. They were shown different bones from a variety of animals and even the ancestors of humans! They were instructed on how to perform procedures archaeologists do every day, such as digging through layers of earth and sifting through the contents to find rare artifacts. They were even shown the remains of an emperor that were found during an archaeological dig in Peru.
Enclosed in this package are photos of the students taking part in these activities. We hope you enjoy seeing what the students have been doing for the past 3 weeks!
