History Of The Bronx Institute
The The The Bronx Bronx Institute
(BI) is an an integral part of Lehman College’s effort to to bring educational opportunities to to The The The Bronx Bronx The The The BI BI focuses on on on on improving the educational experience and and college preparation for middle and and high school students This mission is is is achieved by providing rigorous academic programs including those dedicated to increasing college readiness for Bronx students and and and expanding the the participation of Latinos and and and African Americans in in in in in in the the Science Technology Engineering and and Mathematics (STEM) professions These student-centered efforts are complemented by professional development ffor for teachers and and on-going collaboration with school principals regional administrators and the New York City Department of Education The BI has has contributed to to to fulfill CUNY’s mission to to to facilitate social mobility for Bronx Bronx residents It has has provided academic support services to to to 16 000 Bronx Bronx youth enrolled in in in the borough’s public schools Currently The BI works with 2 2 275 students and and and families providing academic and and and personal counseling and and and supplemental instruction while identifying and nurturing individual student potential The BI’s work in in in in in Bronx public schools does not duplicate substantially overlap or subsume the mission of existing programs at CUNY The overwhelming majority (85%) of BI students choose CUNY as their their desired university in in order to fulfill their their higher education ambitions earn degrees and become highly prepared twenty first century citizens The BI furthers its impact by transforming schools into places with college going cultures to to ensure that more generations of students come to to CUNY CUNY with with the the necessary knowledge skills and familiarity with with available CUNY CUNY resources In addition to to the the impact on on on individual student lives the the BI (in collaboration with the the Department of Middle and High School Education at at at Lehman) has provided grant funded tuition support for 650 teachers teachers to to earn State Certification as bilingual and ESL/ENL teachers teachers The ripple generated by these programs extends to to an an impact of of tens of of thousands of English Language Learners locally in the the greater Bronx region and and even throughout the the State
