Mechanical Restraint (Prohibited)
Mechanical restraint is defined as the use of any device or equipment to restrict a student's
freedom of movement.
Mechanical restraint does not include devices implemented by trained school personnel, that
have been prescribed by an appropriate medical or related services professional, or utilized by
a student and are used for the specific and approved purposes for which such devices were
designed. Examples of such devices include:
• vehicle safety restraints, such as car seats, booster seats, vests, and seat belts when used for the safe
transport of a student in a moving vehicle;
• adaptive devices or mechanical supports used to achieve proper body position, balance, or
alignment;
• prescribed medical restraints used to immobilize, support, or prevent injury; and orthopedically
