Physical Restraint
A physical restraint is defined as a physical restriction that immobilizes or reduces the
ability of a student to move their arms, legs, body, or head freely.
Non-DOE Staff working in schools may not use physical restraint unless they have
received proper training in the use of physical restraints and only when:
Other less restrictive and intrusive interventions and de-escalation techniques would not prevent imminent danger
of serious physical harm to the student or others and there is no known medical contraindication to its use on the
student.
Physical restraints may not be used with preschool students.
NYCPS Staff may not use physical restraint
