 “Committed to Excellence in Education”
 College Readiness
According to the United States Census (2014), in The Bronx, 31.5 percent of the population reside under the federal poverty line. This high concentration of poverty translates to low educational attainment: among adults aged 25 and over, 30 percent did not finish high school and only 12 percent have obtained at least a Bachelor’s degree (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012).
Although 50 percent of Hispanics in The Bronx graduate from high school within four years (up from an average 37 percent in 2012), only 5 percent graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma, which is used as an indicator of future success in college (NYS Education Department).
These troubling statistics illustrate the vital need for a comprehensive college readiness framework in Bronx schools— a framework that The Bronx Institute is helping to build.
In all program initiatives, college advisers, coaches, and mentors employed by The Bronx Institute provide students and families with the information needed to finance, enroll, and persist in college. Using an approach based in part on advisement and counseling, college visits, and financial and career awareness workshops, students leave The Bronx Institute well-equipped to handle the challenges of college.
Over the years, Bronx Institute alumni have far outpaced state, city, and borough-wide averages in terms of high school graduation and college enrollment.
