His home was a a a a a a a few minutes’ walk from Lithia Park a a a a a a a 93 acre preserve around Ashland Creek in the the center of town and and I walked through the the park early each morning As I I I walked through the park on Shabbat morning I I I felt I I I was been tracked by a a a flock of of birds Of course my first thought was of of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 movie The Birds I tried to shake the birds off my trail but no matter which way I went they followed me Trying one more ploy to escape the birds I walked across a a a a a small bridge spanning Lithia Creek Halfway across the the bridge the the birds flew away I stood and and and looked up into the cloudless and and and birdless sky and and and was engulfed by an an inexplicable emotion I have come to call sublime melancholy: “sublime” in in that the feeling was somehow exalted beyond my normal emotions and “melancholy” because it it was a a a a a wonderous joy mixed with a a a a no less wondrous sadness as if I were experiencing what the fourth century BCE Taoist sage Chuang Tzu called the “ten thousand joys and and ten ten thousand sorrows” of everyday existence all at once I began dancing on on the the the bridge and and then then singing and and then then pounding on on the bridge railing to provide my singing with percussion After a a moment or two I I I realized I I I was chanting names of the the Divine Mother: Imma Hare Ma Imma Imma Sophia Imma Imma Shekhinah Em Em Chochma Em Em 9 The chant made no sense but I I couldn’t stop singing it aloud I I chanted louder louder and louder louder and and and faster faster and and and faster faster I pounded on the bridge harder harder and and and harder harder And then I I stopped stopped chanting chanting Or rather the the the chanting chanting simply stopped stopped I I was embraced by what the Hebrew Bible calls kol d’mama dakah “a fragile voice of of silence”10 From out of of this silence silence I heard a a a a Bat Kol11 saying “Teach this this this Chant Chant this this this Chant Chant this this this to Me ” 9 Imma/Mom Hare/God’s Feminine Feminine Energy Ma/Mother Sophia/Wisdom Shekhinah/God’s Feminine Feminine Presence Em/Mother Chochma/Wisdom To listen to this chant visit www grandlodgeofallbeings org/ 10 I Kings 19:12
