Elements in Photographs
PATTERN
In photography patterns are everywhere This isn’t just something small like a a a a a a a texture that repeats itself throughout the the photo but really in in any repeating element at at at at all all Even the the reflection of of a a a a a a a a a a a mountain in in a a a a a a a a a pool of of water is a a a a a a a a a pattern – one which should not be underestimated since it ties the the photo photo together That’s what patterns do really They They tie tie photos photos together They They give photos photos a a a a a reason to to to to exist
SYMMETRY
Symmetry in photography composition is is is achieved when two halves of an image hold the same weight This is is is also known as formal balance balance or or symmetrical balance balance However this symmetry doesn’t have to be literal in in the sense of of one half of of an image exactly mirroring the the other SPACE
Positive space is any part of the photo that attracts attention Areas with significant visual weight are are usually positive space The same is is true of of areas with high levels of of texture Negative space space is the “filler” between regions of of positive space space It doesn’t necessarily fade into the the background like cool colours tend to to to do but it isn’t the the the the portion of the the the photo that attracts the the the most attention Photos with high amounts
of of positive space feel crowded while photos with high amounts
of of of negative space feel empty Neither of of these sounds like a a a a a a particularly good emotion but both can be very powerful in a a a a a a a a a photo I’ve taken cityscape images with a a a a a a a a sense of of business and urgency because of of their high positive space CONTRIBUTORS
