Right: “We really focused on the living room and dining room,” says Herrin, “in terms of size and in terms of finish. That’s where they spend their time.” The ceilings and walls are wrapped in select tight-knot-grade cedar, and floors are end-grain fir with a zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) oil. The millwork is vertical-grain Douglas fir, with quartz countertops.
Below: The wife grew up in a log cabin. “I love having wood all around me,” she says. She crafted the dining table with her father, a professional woodworker. It’s made from the wood of a single arbutus (or madrone, as it’s known in the United States) tree. Pendant
