The barn doors on the outside of the building are made of cedar, and slide on tracks embedded in the deck and an outer wall of the house. They secure the building when the owners aren’t there, and also protect the glass window walls from extreme weather. The house faces south and so it is especially vulnerable to forceful southerly winds. “Joe really understood the place and understood the weather,” says the wife, who has been going to the island most of her life. “That was important to making the house work.”
The owners enjoy a longstanding connection with the site, which is part of a conservation zone. They camped here for years, and even got married on this point. ‘We love the outdoors, and we value that for our kids,’ the wife says. ‘The house was all about being subtle and keeping that connection between indoors and outdoors strong.’
