excavator spent four months scraping back the hillside; sheet piling was drilled 65 feet into the ground to shore it up. Bulldozers dug down to the water table to prepare the foundation. But as the concrete mixers arrived, the tempera- ture dropped to -10 C—far too cold for concrete to set. When the cold snap broke and they descended into the pit to dump the concrete, they couldn’t gain enough traction to haul themselves back out. In what resembled archi- tecture slapstick, tractors towed them to safety.
Costs were mounting, yet Found refused to compromise on the design. To underpin the extension, he agreed to a concrete keel along the entire length of the plot. “Our engineer loved, loved, loved the challenge,” he says. The “wow factor” living room required a 75-foot steel cantilever strong enough to support a party of 200 people standing on the rooftop terrace. “I could have put a column in the corner and saved £150,000, but I was obsessed with feeling like I was in the middle of a forest. To me, it’s all about the view.”
The new wings incorporate four rectangu- lar pavilions framed in steel and wrapped in poured concrete. On the exterior, Found faced them with his own version of the vernacular Cotswold stone. Indoors, however, he left the concrete bare. The custom aggregate matches the yellow tone of the stone, so when you gaze out the windows to the cottage, the colours merge seamlessly.
Less seamless is the transition from old house to new. A glass junction forms a segue between the chocolate-box cottage and a futur- istic anteroom awash in warm concrete. Tall, narrow corridors topped with skylights lead to the common rooms in one direction and the private sleeping quarters in the other.
Guests could have the entire cottage to them- selves but, when Olivia and Oscar are away, most prefer to stay in the new bedroom wing instead. “When you tell people you have a house in the Cotswolds, they assume it’s full of spiders and c•obwebs,” says Found. “They don’t expect this.”
