Peoria’s military families head back to school with free supplies
PEORIA — Back 2 School Illinois and Operation Homefront offered Peoria’s military families a helping hand by sending their kids back to school with free school supplies.
Parents from the local Navy and Marine Corps Reserve and Army and Air National Guard were welcomed to the Peoria Air National Guard Base on Sunday afternoon to collect basic school supplies and a few extras.
Back 2 School Illinois distributes pre-packed supply kits with all the essentials, and Operation Homefront’s Back-to-School Brigade works with Dollar Tree to bring in supplies donated by customers to fill kids’ backpacks every year.
“It’s really nice that I’ll be able to save a little money this year,” Tech Sgt. Jeff Gelband said. “It’ll help us out and everything’s kind of right here in one place — it’s really simplified, really well-organized.”
