• Better from warm wet weather
• Paresis, progressing towards paralysis with stiffness
and contraction of tendons
• Constipation with ineffectual urging, passes stool better standing, signs of colitis
• Insecurity of the sphincters (Urination difficult but few drops are released when animal coughs, sneezes or on exertion)
• Itching or burning of the urethra opening
• Painful scars and warts
• Nocturnal insomnia
• Paralysis of the cauda equine
• Dry cough, cannot bring up the mucus, with involuntary urinary or faecal emissions.
• Painful right hip-joint
• Joint pains are better in the bed and start again as
Difficulty to bend their back to pass a stool. The paresis starts with motorneuron issues of the cauda equina followed by a reduced sensitivity. The skin is thin, delicate and insensitive. Young animals could be late developers with neurological issues and urine leaking during the first part of the sleep.
The patient is more likely timid, anxious, sad, agitated, weepy, apprehensive about the future, emotionally hypersensitive, easily frightened (especially at night) with little inclination to do things (work). But they can become angry and argumentative, usually related to and exaggerated sense of compassion based on egocentric motivations: worried about what may happen to others if this reflects their own well-being.
Comparisons with other remedies.
Phosphorus:
Their type of compassion is very similar, as is some of their behaviour (even their occasional bout of anger), and the way the tissues are damaged (degeneration). But better not to change remedy from Phos to Caust, give a dose of Nux Vomica between the two. Phosphorus’ compassion is much more altruistic and is more lively.
Coffea
Also a very sensitive remedy both emotionally and physically but does not have the sad morose underlying disposition. They can have the same ethiology and present asthma and paralysis Coffea is more vivacious and agitated, suffers with mood swings and finds it often difficult to sleep.
Rhus Tox
Consequence of cold and wet, more agitated and worse at
the beginning of the movement and clearly better after a bit of exercise. Causticum is only agitated at night.
Nux Vomica
Even when finding it difficult to walk, they will still try and push through and knock you over. More spasms, exaggerated reactions. Sensitive to wind and the environment.
Arsenicum album
More authoritarian, looking for order, rituals. Better for warmth. Their agitation is more ritualistic, organised.
Warts: the warts of Causticum can be: hard, inflamed, small, on a stalk, flat, bleeding and sensitive to touch. But note there are many remedies associated with warts.
According to the AFADH
Causticum totally identifies with those around him: the other is him, he is the other. There is a link between importance and being preoccupied with oneself and the others. (In this sense resembles Arsenicum: Ars sees somebody hanging and they hang themselves.)
This leads to Causticum losing its protection: in the dark, alone, no protection, destitute. Causticum sees himself in the others and sees their suffering and issues. He needs protection, care and avoiding dangers.
The reaction to this perception can be as follows:
1) Ambivalence:amImeoramItheother?
2) He wants to protect the others: the good dictator, wants to free people from being enslaved (this makes Causticum feel they help themselves)
soon as they get up
Confirmed indications: Beginning of a flu-like state, warts, the consequence of suppressed eruptions, the consequences of old burn scars, consequence of an emotional shock, rheumatoid inflammation with retraction of tendons, cauda equina paresis to paralysis syndrome
The type: more likely an older animal, with warts that bleed easily, slow, weak, with rheumatoid pains (better from warm wet weather). Insecurity of the sphincters: even though constipated will tend to pass unnoticed stool.
