BAHVS President’s letter (July 2012) by Mark Elliott
Just this week I found myself treating a reindeer with acute bloat. Reindeer, for those that do not know, can suf- fer neurological symptoms quite quickly in such circum- stances due to Vitamin B1 depletion. Certainly this appeared the case here but where to get B1 at 9.30pm? I had just had supper with a Finnish chap discussing a novel electrolyte/anti-oxidant/B vitamin formulation with trial samples in his car. Dragging him out of his comfy B&B we managed to drench the Reindeer to give it the best chance. Does anything ever happen by chance I wonder?
So if our coming together cannot be by chance, then for what purpose do we exist as an organization? I have heard it said that Homeopathy is not the medicine of tomorrow, but the medicine of the day after tomorrow! If so then our purpose must surely be to lay down a framework for the future, to nurture new talent and to safeguard the evidence base that has gone before. In part the latter will be achieved through the new database www.homeo- pathicvet.org as it grows, supported by the many publica- tions members contribute to magazines, books and in other fields.
and the inspiration they have been to so many of us worldwide.
Homeopathy is not the medicine of tomorrow, but the medicine of the day after tomorrow!

BAHVS Conference this year had a truly international flavour with delegates and speakers from all over the world, which, along with a wonderful seaside location and good weather, helped to make it a resounding success. We had some amazing speakers, each with their own perspective, which I can only give a flavour of here, and I recommend you get copies of the record- ings for more in depth study.
We launched straight into practical cases with “Farm Frenzy” from Edward de Beukelar, who showed his deep and broad knowledge of materia med- ica; his ability to apply it so logically is inspiring. This time he focussed on farm animal cases. He presented Sarsaparilla used for a cow with issues

Conference 2012 was a challenging time for me. Snowed
with lots of sick birds needing my attention, I dipped in
AGM, Saturday’s dinner and then Sunday afternoon to present my Spark,
but it was clear even from my brief engagement, that this was one of the
best conferences we have ever put on, and a fitting conclusion before we
try out new formats for conferences of the future. The presence of the
founding members bar one (albeit I suspect there in spirit) of the associ-
ation, a raft of new faces from overseas and the UK, as well as so many
friends, left me reflecting what a great bunch of people BAHVS has as it’s
core, and how amazing we have come so far in just 30 years. The found-
ing fathers of our Association can be rightly proud of what they set up, moment?) Jonathan’s offer comes at perfect time, and for 2014 Stuart
The former must be via attracting new blood and allowing it to flourish.
Nothing by chance – it must therefore be for very good reason we have met Jonathan from Honey’s who is enabling our 2013 conference in Ireland. Looking back at previous conference papers we were 20 years ahead of our colleagues in the use of nutraceuticals and supplements. Hopefully it will not take so long before natural feeding takes it’s rightful place as the norm.
For an organization with some financial challenges (who hasn’t at the
and I co-incidentally had almost the same idea to showcase British talent, engage the wider profession and hopefully bring in new blood to increase the energy still further at what will be a novel conference format.
Synchronicity in action... What fun.
