Last week I ‘accidentally’ climbed up one of the highest Lake District mountains, Hellvelyn. I was intending to walk up two neighbouring fells but, on the way, up I could see Hellvelyn’s summit only a shortish distance away and it seemed silly not to make a small detour. I was so glad I did, it’s a wonderful summit; curving broad and long with a tremendous view over most of the Lakes. There’s a stone shelter at the top and several people were standing chatting with that camaraderie born of shared endeavour. I got talking to a woman in her seventies who said she had just ‘popped’ up Hellvelyn before going out to lunch with some friends. I hope I will be as sprightly when I’m her age!
It got me thinking about other groups of people with that sense of possibility and achievement and how special that it is. Of course BAHVS came to mind and although we’re a small group, I always feel a particular sense of camaraderie when we’re together, we’ve weathered a few storms, climbed a few mountains of our own but we keep going for the
