Healing the Soul: The Lives of Samuel Hahnemann and William Lilley Published by Saltire Books
ISBN: 978-1-90812-705-1
For only the second time in my life I have returned to page one and started again. Healing the Soul is vast, inspiring, brave, important, spiritual and intensely personal. It is also beau- tifully eloquent and David's love of myth is ever present. I felt it had been written for me alone.
The book is brave because it is not full of David’s archetypal remedies analogous to the Big Bang and our planet’s evolution; you need to wait for volume two. It is about life, the uni- verse and everything, based around many remarkable beings, Samuel Hahnemann and William Lilley being but two.
An introduction introduces you to the author and his ideas, and details the development of homeopathy in South Africa. Next with complete certainty and clarity the purpose of life at the deepest level is revealed: to achieve Soul reali- sation and health through death of the ego-self. This theme, together with homeopathy’s role in the process, is often returned to.
Then the book starts – Hahnemann’s story. The wars and sieges as Napoleon’s armies surged back and forth across Europe; the wan- derings to escape poverty, persecution by allopaths and apothecaries; the harshness of life seen in the fates of his children – 1 insane, 1 killed as a baby, 1 died young, 1 died at 30, 2 murdered! Despite this, Hahnemann passion- ately shouldered a Herculean workload, and with genius of concept and flexibility of thought, realised and refined similia similibus curentur. He concurrently ignited the war between home- opathy and allopathy with astounding censori- ousness and tactlessness, leading to lost opportunities and contributing to homeopathy's present juncture. Also detailed are Hahnemann’s historical influences including Galen and Paracelsus, and many influential homeopaths after Hahnemann’s death, such as the Vulcan Jenichen, veterinary Bonninghausen, Lachesis Hering and General von Korsakoff. We end the first half with the passionate love story of Samuel and Melanie. Woven within this great tale the practice and philosophy of homeopathy are ever present, including miasms, quantum medicine, research and why homeopathy can- not be judged by allopathic standards, together with a robust defence against fundamental sci- entistism.
“The purpose I was put here on earth – to become better myself as far as possible and to make better everything around me that is within my power to improve”. Hahnemann 1832.
And then part two – the life of David’s father. I initially wondered ‘why?’, but soon realised the importance. It addresses fully the elephant that lurks in our consulting rooms – there’s nothing
in the pills. David was
raised in a house,
where the spiritual
and material were
equally certain,
enabling him to write
with complete author-
ity. His father William
was trained in medi-
cine, homeopathy and
spiritual healing by Dr Letari. Consequently William became one of the great homeopaths of the mid 20th century, and virtually single- handed introduced homeopathy to Africa. Dr Letari, a medically trained Brahmin Hindu, was shot dead by the British two months after William's birth. He became a spirit that returned to our physical plane to benefit humanity and loved and guided the whole Lilley family until William’s death. David had a physical and a spiritual father – twin souls motivated by the same desire to spread the message of the eter- nal imperishable nature of the human spirit. “Reincarnation permits the karmic assets and debts of the soul to be carried forward from life to life... when the individual dies past experi- ences, joys and sorrows are taken forward into the spirit world”; Dr Letari.
Other spiritual beings were omnipresent in the household, including the great soul Silver Birch, who gives a detailed explanation of the spirit world; “To die is not tragic. To live in your world is tragic. To see the garden of the Great Spirit choked with the weeds of selfishness and greed is tragedy”. “You who are encased in matter do not comprehend beauty as it may be. You have never seen our light, colour, scenery, trees, flowers, trees, birds, rivers, mountains – and yet your world fears death”.
William Lilley touched the lives of many, bringing a message of trust in self, life and cre- ation...healing those deemed incurable. His life was an example of complete commitment and dedication to the cause of spirit and homeopa- thy. He left deep footprints, which will endure for an age to come.
“My son, may this book serve you as well as it has served me, and remember above all; ‘Only the Best is Good Enough’”; written by William in the front of David’s copy of Clarkes Materia Medica.
This is an enthralling tale, powerful as high myth, which addresses at the deepest level homeopathy, the vital force, soul and spirit. It could change your life view permanently. Healing The Soul will be required reading for my first year students, yet has advanced my understanding of what I do more than any book I have read for years.
“The study of homeopathy takes the student into a world of magic and miracles”. David Lilley

14th Congress for Holistic Veterinary Medicine in Nuremburg, Germany 25th – 27th April 2014
Special Guest: DVM Ronald Hamm, USA
Most of the classical healing protocols of alternative medicine are seriously com- promised and overly complex, because they still use the material logics of Newton and Maxwell. To understand healing and become more effective and efficient healers, we have to familiarize ourselves with the basic tenets of quan- tum physics. When we reframe the heal- ing protocols according to the principles of Quantum Mechanics they become much simpler and more effective.
Ronald Hamm is the author of Analog Medicine & The Philosophic Foundation of Holistic Medicine.
