Poisoning with Metaldehyd – (slug pellets) by Dr. Albert Hellmeier, Germany
“Elba”, terrier-mix, female neutered, born in 2006.
June 18th, 2013
12:00 pm – dog is suddently not able to go downstairs, is shivering, cramping, panting, sensitive to touch. Dramatic worsening while driving to my practice.
12:30 pm – involuntary stool and urination while being carried to my practice. Stool is garish green. Entering the entrance the dog is already lifeless and the owner is crying: Elba has died!
Symptoms
Opisthotonus, pulse weak and extremely slow (about 25/min.), pupils dilated and angular, temperature 41,5oC, gasping for breath, clonic con- vulsions. Faeces garish green caused by eating slug pellets yesterday or the day before.
Therapy
• Acupuncture LG26 Renzhong
• Intravenous infusion Sterofundin VG5
• Diazepam 30mg i.v. (no effect)
• Belladonna XM (split dose, every 5 min.: no effect)
• Tabacum XM (split dose, every 5 min.: no effect)
• Repertorisation: Veratrum viride XM (split dose, every 5 min.:
no effect)

Referral to another clinic for further observation and therapy with the order to give Opium every hour until evening.
17:00 pm: Elba gets a gastric and colonic lavage, because the owner recognises, that her dog has eaten slug pellets today too.

Elba gets her Opium still 3 times a day and in addition Metaldehyd D10 once a day.

Discharge from clinic
June 21th, 2013
General condition is well, she eats well, legs are still atactic, rectum is bright red, tongue bluish.
Opium is stopped, Metaldehyd continued once a day for one week.
June 28th, 2013
Elba has completely recovered.

In the meantime it is 14:00 pm, when the dog gets the first dose of Opium. At 14:30 pm the temperature has fallen to 39,2oC, pupils con- tracted, respiration normal, convulsions decreasing, dog is sleeping.
