Page 3 - Summer 14
P. 3

Welcome to this late Summer edition of the mag. In this issue we have the last contribu- tions from Mark Elliott as BAHVS President and Jane Keogh (Junior VP) who’ll take over from him after the conference in September. I’m sure for both of them their period in office has gone quickly but with much achieved during the last three years.
The conference itself has also come around quickly even though it’s later than the nor- mal end of June slot we’ve been used to. It will be interesting to see how the change in format this year is greeted by the member- ship – 2 days instead of 3 with a single day earlier in the year. Let’s hope it’s a positive response with good attendance – we owe that much to the conference comittee, spon- sors and exhibitors.
Hope you enjoy these pages. All the best.

Possibly part of the answer by John Saxton, UK
‘It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his reputation depends on him not under- standing it’
Those who are committed to homeopathy have all spent hours wondering why there is so much opposition to what seems like a self-evident truth. The following quote by Upton Sinclair may provide part of the answer:
“It is difficult to get a man to understand some- thing when his reputation depends on him not understanding it”
Substitute the term ‘reputation’ for ‘salary’ and there is another aspect of the opposition puzzle which falls into place. One leading opponent of homeopathy once said in an interview (an unguarded comment?) ‘if homeopathy is right, we shall have to rewrite all the physics text- books’-shock! Horror! And, to be fair, human nature being what it is, it is difficult to discard a lifetime of preconceptions and prejudices – a process which involves invoking ‘the true spirit of scientific enquiry’.
In relation to homeopathy the (deliberate?) inabil- ity to understand takes two forms. Firstly there is the obstinate clinging to the unchanged Newtonian concepts of dilution and an unwilling- ness to consider any advances in knowledge since then, without accepting that such advances do not in any way invalidate his concepts but in reality add to the depth of his perception. Secondly there is the insistence that the inves- tigative methods of modern medicine are the only legitimate methods and anything that challenges these must, by definition, be at best misguided or at worst malignant – either way it’s HERESY, to be eliminated with all the fervour of religious fanatics!
So how does knowing that help? Not a lot, it must be admitted. However, there may be comfort in the thought that ‘science does not advance by conversion but only by the dying off of old men’, except that old men can infect young men before they go!
So the struggle goes on. But be honest; secretly, in your heart of hearts, don’t you really enjoy the fight?
‘if homeopathy is right, we shall have to rewrite all the physics textbooks’
The British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons (BAHVS) was formed in 1981, to advance the understanding, knowl- edge and practice of homeopathy. It aims to stimulate professional awareness of homeopa- thy and to encourage and to provide for the
training of veterinary surgeons in the practice of homeopathy.
It is an open forum for differing approaches to the subject of veterinary homeopathy and it’s application, allowing for constructive inter- changes of ideas.
