Colonel Nimrod “Mac” McNair Jr., USAF (Ret.) passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He was born November 2, 1923 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to parents
Nimrod McNair Sr. and Salema Flowers McNair.
Graduating from Tuscaloosa High School, he joined the Army Air
Force in 1942. Mac served in four wars; WWII, Korea, the Cold War and Vietnam. His Air Force career spanned more than 30 years.
During World War II and Vietnam, Mac flew 600 combat hours on 110 missions, was shot down twice, survived four crashes and was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross among many other decorations.
In addition to his piloting days, Colonel McNair enjoyed a distinguished career as a professor at North Carolina State University, a director of the aerospace program in the Pentagon, an Air Force advisor to NASA, a combat advisor in Vietnam, and a candidate for governor of the State of Georgia.
He received a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama and an M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of
Technology. His numerous academic honors included membership in the National Honor Society, Phil Eta Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, Theta Tau and Tau
Delysia and Col. Nimrod “Mac” McNair, Jr.
Kappa Epsilon.
Col. McNair was chairman and founder of the Executive Leadership Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting
ethics in business and society. He lectured and lead seminars in more than 30 countries on management and leadership and authored three books. His favorite topics were ethics based on the Ten Commandments.
Mac was a former Commander of American Legion Post #134 in Atlanta and a member of the Air Force Association, Retired Officers Association, Society of the Strategic Air Command, Silver Wings Fraternity, Veterans of Foreign Wars, WWII Round Table, Atlanta Old Guard and Church of the Apostles.
Colonel McNair was preceded in death by his first wife of 63 years Amy Phillips McNair. His is survived by his wife Delysia Ashwood McNair, daughter Jan Bradd, son John McNair and two step-sons, Craig and Scott Ashwood, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mac was laid to rest with full military honors September 22, 2017 at the North Georgia National Cemetery.
