  2. CalculationofCeilingCharacteristics:
We have determined that the optimal reverberation time for our room is 0.61. Next, we calculate the absorption coefficient of our ceiling (αω).
For example, in a room with papered brick walls, parquet floors, and a sofa, actual reverberation time will depend upon how much sound is absorbed by these furnishings and finishes. By calculating this and knowing the optimal reverberation time, we can determine the level of sound absorption needed for our ceiling.
From the reference table of absorption coefficients, we choose the values for the applicable materials. We then use the following formula to calculate the actual reverberation time for this room:
T = 0.164V A
Where V = the volume of the room in cubic meters, and A = The total sound absorption of all the surfaces in the room, calculated by the formula:
A = αω1S1+ αω2 S2+...αωnSn
A = 0.11 x 24 + 0.05 x 60 + 0.33 x 3.5 + αω ceiling x 24 = 6.795 + 24αω ceiling
The optimal reverberation time T opt (Calculated in Step 1) is 0.61, therefore, we obtain the following equation:
0.61= 0.164V A
A = 0.164 x 72 0.61
= 19.36
