 ASH GROVE CEMENT
Ultra-resistant Pavement for the Port of Montreal
As the largest port in eastern Canada, the Port of Montreal handles approximately 40 million tonnes of cargo from around the world annually, with direct connections to more than 140 countries. It was searching for an innovative and sustainable solution for resurfacing its most critical roadways.
The Port of Montreal chose roller-compacted concrete (RCC), known for its strength, durability and resistance to very heavy loads.
Combining the performance of conventional concrete with the simplicity of asphalt, RCC is composed of the same materials as conventional concrete—cement, water, aggregates and admixtures—but in different proportions, making it a dry concrete without slump. Once compacted, RCC becomes very dense and sturdy.
The Port of Montreal project began in August 2020 and lasted two months. The cement marketing group from the Ash Grove cement plant in Joliette was mandated to supply a total of 9,000 tonnes of Gub-SF cement to produce the RCC.
The installation was entrusted to Groupe Bellemare, a Quebec-based family business founded in 1950 that has built
a solid track record working with RCC, particularly for crane runway projects in ports and airport tarmacs. Fully automated operations using the state-of-the-art Rapidmix pugmill enabled the production of dry concrete at a rate of up to 350 tonnes/hour. RCC placement was then carried out using a high-precision finishing paver and smooth rollers.
Given its outstanding properties and excellent price- performance ratio, it is easy to understand why RCC is selected for use in so many applications.
The Port of Montreal in numbers
 40.6 M tonnes of goods in 2019  More than 2,000 ships annually  Up to 2,500 trucks per day
 60 to 80 trains per week
