Can you hear me? – BY HELENA MACE
After the success of my last albums, I thought I would write a new single. This particular project had been in the pipeline in lockdown and was meant to go on my Unbroken album but due to lockdowns and lack of funds from losing so much work, I decided to save the track for another time.
The lyric, ‘can you hear me? can you hear my words at all?’ had been in my head for a while and scribbled down on a scrap bit of paper. The title, Shifting Sands followed shortly after one with some basic lyrics and no melody. I’d more or less forgotten about this track when I picked up my guitar to come up with some tunes and the melody for Shifting Sands was suddenly born.
I had wanted the track to be a melodic ballad but with something different added to it and from the moment I finished the lyrics, I had my heart set on a harmonica. I managed to finally get into the studio again after 3 UK lockdowns back in April and got back in to record this track with my usual producer Matt Black of Hangover Hill records. I recorded my guitar and vocals, harmonies etc and the keys were added by Matt. I had then left the song with him for another good friend of mine, Si Genaro, to add his Harmonica. Once the track was sent back to me and mastered, I realised that this had been a great decision for this record. Shifting Sands had gone up a whole new level and it was perfect.
The fans loved it too and on release it became a number 2 on Itunes, Number 1 on Australian airplay and a best seller on Amazon UK singles chart. It may not have been on my last album but it became a single and became a success in its own right. I also managed to record a little video for the song which got over 3k hits on you tube. Just me and my camera phone. It can be found on YouTube. com/helenamace.
I also managed to squeeze in another album track written my Dad, Rob Atkins and his 2 friends, John Ginger (my godfather) and Alan Coles who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. The song is titled Midnight Adaggio and is a superb piano production which will be on the new, yet untitled, album which will be available on download and CD although I am unsure of a release date as yet.
I have just finished writing a few new tracks for the album 13
and the next single, Never ending days, will be released later this summer and I cannot wait to share it with the world.
I had never really thought of doing a new album so soon but sometimes these things just happens don’t they....
