Play, Promote, Perform – BY HELENA MACE
I thought I’d take the opportunity this month to talk about my promotional and radio work.
I spend a lot of time at home writing my own music and promoting myself as an artist. I have no management or financial back up but I spend hours trying to promote what I do.
I also promote for an online organisation called Country Music Social Media who are based in the UK. We help many acts gain Social media followers, radio play and general support in the industry. We had recently held a festival in Leicestershire which I wrote about in a previous article. Some of these acts are featured heavily on Radio Downtown such as myself, Taynee Lord and the Crookes, Paul Jupe , Heartlands Roots Band, Charlotte Young and many more. All these artists are unsigned and making waves in British country influenced music. Country Music Social Media is the brainchild of Ken Meakin who spends most of his time supporting the artists and trawling through social media to help them gain notoriety.
Being an unsigned artist is hard. It takes guts and hard work and you get many a knock back so being thick skinned is very useful. There are loads of competition and making music is a very expensive thing to do so every bit of merchandise you buy, every CD and every share on social media means the world and can really help get our music out there. We are writing down our personal thoughts to share with the world and everyone who takes the time to listen makes it worthwhile for us.
I also host a show on radio downtown where I specialise in unsigned music mixed in with the major artists and I love playing new tracks from the artists who have worked so hard with limited funds to get a track played on the radio for people to listen to. Radio play is still very important as it gives us a platform to get heard. My show is on at 5pm UK times on a Friday and 2pm on a Sunday.
