   Retired Educator, Longtime Pastor Dies

A popular Tampa minister and retired educator died last Tuesday. Rev. Oscar Johnson, Jr. was 90- years-old.
Rev. Johnson served as a member of the Hillsborough County School District for several years. He retired as the Assistant Principal at Hillsborough High School. Prior to transferring to Hillsborough during the integration phase, Rev. Johnson had served as an athletic coach and as a Dean.

Rev. Johnson retired as an educa- tor in 1991 after 35 years of service. In 1978, Rev. Johnson was ap- pointed as the Senior Pastor of Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Under his leadership, the church grew and 18 ministers served during his tenure. Addition- ally, 18 deacons were ordained as
well.
After leading the church for 35
years, Rev. Johnson retired De- cember 31, 2013. At the time, he was honored for his leadership and the Oscar Johnson Fellowship Cen- ter was named in his honor.
Rev. Johnson was married to the late Mrs. Willie Pearl John- son and they were they parents of 3 sons and 1 daughter. He is sur- vived by his children, grandchil- dren, other family members and friends.
Rev. Johnson passed away on September 3, 2019, at Advent Health following a lengthy illness. Funeral services for Rev. Johnson will be held on Saturday, September 14th, at 11 a.m., at Greater Bethel M. B. Church. Ray Williams Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
