 Commissioner To Hold Town Hall Meeting To Discuss Lead Poisoning

Commissioner Gwen Myers is hosting a Town Hall meeting for residents of Grant Park, Florence Villa, Dixie Farm or Uceta Gardens, on Wednesday, April 21, at 6:30 p. m. The meeting will be held at Kenly Park, 3101 North 66th Street, Tampa (33619).
“This meeting is to discuss the lead poison at Gopher Re- sources, also known as Enviro- focus Industries. A series of news articles on lead poison at Gopher Resource were pub- lished in the local paper,” Comm. Myers said.
“We want to inform the residents of the above commu- nities on the health and safety concerns as it relates to lead

poison and provide education and testing for lead in children and adults,” said Myers.
According to the published reports in the Tampa Bay Times, employees from Go- pher Resources say they have complained about the lead poi- soning for many years. Head- quartered in Minnesota, the
plant in Tampa is one of two lead battery recycling factories in the country.
“Some of the health issues associated with high levels of lead exposure are: heart ail- ments, kidney disease, infertil- ity, hypertension, muscle weakness, behavioral prob- lems, reduced attention span, cogitative disabilities and de- bilitating headaches.
Community partners par- ticipating are: Congress- woman Kathy Castor’s staff, State’s Department of Health, County’s Environmen- tal Protection Commission, City Councilman Orlando Gudes, and School Board Member Henry “Shake” Washington,” said Myers.
She is encouraging resi- dents in the named communi- ties to please attend.
