Parents of Andrew Joseph, III:
‘It’s Been 3 Years, But It Seems Like 3 Weeks’
ANDREW JOSEPH, III
... killed crossing I-4 after being ejected from Florida State
Fair.
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
This time of year is diffi- cult at best for Andrew and Deanna Joseph. On Feb- ruary 7, 2014, their 14-year- old son, Andrew Joseph, III, was killed attempting to cross Interstate 4. The teenager, along with 98 other students had been ejected from the Florida State Fair.
As a result of the tragedy, his parents have become ad- vocates of change. His father said, “We have gotten half of what we want. Now, parents or an adult must be with them after 6 p.m. But it is still an unsafe environment. A child can’t go to Chuck E. Cheese without an adult, why can they go to the Fair?”
Joseph further said that another concern is that offi- cials are allowing people with concealed weapons per- mits to take guns onto the fairgrounds. “Last year, they allowed 114 legal guns into the fair. You can’t put guns, alcohol and children in the
same environment. You can’t take a gun into the Strawberry Festival, but you can take your gun into the fair.”
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph filed a federal lawsuit and have been given a trial date of February 5, 2018.
Meanwhile, the parents have formed The Andrew Joseph Foundation and they have established a series of events for this weekend.
They will host a “Student Day” demonstration that will begin at 1 p.m., on Friday. They will be joined by sev- eral others from around the country who have lost chil- dren or loved ones. At 6 p.m., they will host a Meet & Greet Mixer.
The following day, the “We Remember Andrew Joseph, III, Dinner Gala.” The weekend of events will conclude with a Stolen Lives Prayer Service at Grace Tab- ernacle COGIC.
