A Joyful Sound (vv 14-16)
The Levites had the full responsibility of the ark. David told them they could appoint others to help with the planned celebration. In order to be prepared to ap- proach the ark, they went through some rigorous ritu- als.
The fellow Levites were musicians who were empow- ered to play their songs as an expression of worship. David made it clear that they had to be joyful sounds. Many of the Levitical musicians uses string and percussion instru- ments to get that joyful sound. Harps and lyres played the melody, while the bronze cymbals would be used to keep the tempo lively.
A Time Of Rejoicing (vv 25-29a)
David began the march by sacrificing7 rams and 7 bulls. This sacrifice reflected the seriousness of sin, and the umcompromising nature of God’s holiness.
For the celebration, David dressed modestly, not in his kingly attire or military armor.
Several choirs joined the musicians for the procession into Jerusalem with great joy and celebration. This all touched David so much until he began to dance, express- ing his humility before the Lord, showing how grateful he was to be covered by God’s grace.
Throughtout the Bible God’s people made joyful
music to the Lord. Still today, God is pleased when His people choose to worship
him with joyful noise, espe- cially joyful music that comes from the heart.
David’s Worship
Scriptures
1 Chronicles 15:1-3, 14-16 KJV
1 And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
2 Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
3 And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it.
14 So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.
15 And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.
16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
25 So David, and the eld- ers of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obededom with
joy. 26 And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.
27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.
28 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trum-
pets, and with cymbals, mak- ing a noise with psalteries and harps.
29a And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal, the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing.
Background
With this week’s lesson, we begin a new quarter. This quarter explores ways ofd honoring God through wor- ship. David and Solomon honored God by establishing the center of worship in Jerusalem and building the temple. Jesus taught about right attitudes that honor God through worship.
Unit 1 tells about David bringing the ark to Jerusalem, leading the peo- ple in a psalm of thanksgiv- ing, and planning to build a house for God.
The Ark Brought To Jerusalem
