East Tampa Academy Ends School Year With ‘Color Wars’ Field Day Of Fun
BY A. RENEE’ THORNTON
The last day of school was not a day of sorrow for East Tampa Academy, but a day of redemption. After a year of dealing with the infamous COVID-19, the sunny day did not hesitate to spread light on this school-wide event.
Teachers wore their team shirt to represent their class- room and the field Day theme, “Color Wars.” Each student as well as the eLearn- ers had the opportunity to participate in the various tra- ditional games and competi- tions.
Parents and members of the community cheered the stu- dents on as they competed in sac race, egg and spoon race, water balloon toss, and yes, an old-time favorite tug of war. The entire staff was fully involved with making this day a success.
Ms. Frankie Jones, East Tampa Academy VPK Direc-
tor, and Rainbow Community Chair dedicated the commu- nity room as another exten- sion of field day to exhibit all the creative art portraits through the tutelage of Stage- works and VeroPolo.
East Tampa Academy Board Chair, Michelle Shimberg stated, “They loved it! Being able to hear the laughter of children again was like music to my ears.” The atmosphere was filled with community dignitaries and stakeholders such as: Major Calvin Johnson from Tampa Police Depart- ment, who challenged the boys to a relay race and he gifted the winners with free hair cut vouchers.
In addition, representatives from the Tampa Housing Au- thority, members of the East Tampa Academy Board of Di- rectors and a surprise visit from the Kona Shaved Ice truck compliments of stu- dent(s) parent and SAC mem- ber, Heather Conley.
