Infant Dies While In State Care
This week, a 7-month-old baby girl in the care of the state died after she slept next to a 10-year-old on a couch.
Myracle Collins was taken into care in February when her mother was ar- rested after a report of do- mestic violence, police said. She was placed with a friend of her mother’s by the Florida Department Of Chil- dren and Families contrac- tor, Eckerd Kids.
Tampa Fire Rescue was
called to the child’s tempo- rary home last Tuesday after the 10-year-old awakened to find the baby unresponsive. Paramedics tried to revive the infant, but were unsuc- cessful.
DCF has assigned a criti- cal incident team to investi- gate the death. Officials from Eckerd declined to comment.
Myracle’s mother, Rolanda Angelique Cusseaux, 35, was arrested February 15th by police in
the 2000 block of 25th Av- enue, on a domestic battery charge. Police said she had been fighting with Myra- cle’s father, Mederick Collins. Cusseaux was ar- rested after she shoved Collins in front of the offi- cers.
According to the report, Myracle was given to Cusseaux’s friend, Tarshemia Martin, to care for until Cusseaux was re- leased.
