Illness Claims Lives Of Sisters Days Apart

Two Tampa families will lay to rest the matriarchs of their families on Saturday. The women were sisters who passed 3 days apart.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary L. Collins will take place at 11 a.m. Funeral services for Mother Mag- gie L. Hagins will take place at 2 p.m. Both funerals will be held at New Salem Primitive Baptist Church, where both sisters were members for more than 20 years. Dr. Benjamin Curry, pastor will officiate at both services.
Mrs. Mary L. Collins and Mother Maggie L. Hagins were natives of Bessemer, Alabama. Their parents, the late Tony Washington, Sr., and the late Mrs. Fannie Mae Mullins relocated their 10 children to Tampa when they were small.
Mrs. Collins attended the public schools of Hills- borough County and gradu- ated from Middleton High School. She continued her education at Hillsborough Community College in the field of Nursing.
Mrs. Collins, 70, was an LPN at Tampa General Hospital for 20 years. She worked an additional 13 years as a Nurse at the Hills- borough County Jail, retir- ing in 2010. She was also a longtime member of New Salem P. B. Church for more
than 20 years, her son, Jewel Collins, III, said.
Collins said his mother liked being at home and she loved to read and do puz- zles.
Mrs. Collins passed on Tuesday, May 15th, following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her family at her home at the time of her passing.
In addition to her son,
Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband, Jewel Collins, Jr., a son, and daughter. She is also sur- vived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brothers, and other family members.
Mother Maggie L. Hagins attended the public schools of Hillsborough County. She later went to work to help her family fi-
nancially.
As an adult, Mother
Hagins worked as a house- keeper for several years. Later in her life, she became a full time homemaker.
Mother Hagins, 76, was a longstanding member of New Salem Primitive Baptist Church for more
than 30 years. She was a Mother and a member of the Choir, Usher Board, and Hospitality Committee.
Her daughter, Ms. Vanessa Parks, said her mother and her aunt were very close. “She enjoyed shopping, she loved music, and she loved to dance.”
On Friday, May 18th, after battling a lengthy ill- ness, Mother Hagins passed away quietly at home surrounded by her family.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Hagins is survived by her husband, Leroy “Roy” Hagins, Sr., and 7 other children. Her son, Samuel L. Hicks, II, preceded her in death.
She is also survived by grandchildren, great grand- children, sisters, brothers, and other family members.
