Super Bowl Picks
Former NFL Players Pick Their Winners For Super Bowl 50
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
This year’s Super Bowl is layered in gold, as the NFL cel- ebrates the 50th Super Bowl. The big game will be played at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Facing off on February 7th will be Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos, against Cam Newton and his Car- olina Panthers.
Some former NFL players in the area were asked to pick their winners.
Former Tampa Bay Bucca- neer tight end, Jimmie Giles: “I think I’m
going with
Cam and
his boys. If
you study
the history
of the game,
I haven’t found any of the ex- perts who thought Cam was worthy of a number one pick. I know about 8 guys who are so- called experts who thought Cam was not worthy of being a professional.
“Cam’s style of play and his exuberance is something new to the NFL. This guy has it all. He has a strong arm, he’s very intelligent, and I would
describe him as a more defined Doug Williams.
“How many teams get a chance to draft great quarter- backs? You have to give the Carolina Panther organization credit for making the right de- cision.”
Former Tampa Bay Bucca- neer quarterback, Parnell Dickinson:
“I think it’s
going to be
one of the
toughest
Super Bowls
we’ve seen
in a long time. I believe Denver will pull it off, and leave with the victory.
“I’m very impressed with the Denver defense especially their secondary. I’d really like to see Cam do it, and it could go either way. They are both great teams with great quarter- backs.
“I think the defenses will determine the outcome of the game. This is the type of game where our heart is telling you one thing and your head is telling you something else. It’s up to you who or what you lis- ten to.”
Former Chicago Bear and Tampa Bay Buccaneer defen- sive end, Tyrone Keys, has a
special inter- est in this year’s Super Bowl.
Carolina Panther head coach, Ron
Rivera, was his teammate when the Bears won their Super Bowl in 1985.
Keys said all of the players from that team, including Rivera, are in Chicago for their 30th reunion and Rivera kicked the event off this year.
“I remember Ron standing next to Coach Buddy Ryan the entire game, and he was al- ready being groomed to be a head coach. We’re always cheering for him.
“We’re cheering for Ron and the Panthers, and the sim- ilarities between his team and ours is a lot closer than people think. We both enjoyed having suffocating defenses, and we both entered the Super Bowl with only one loss.
“For Ron, he’s gone full circle and we’re waiting to see if the Panthers are the team of destiny. The two best teams are playing, and that’s the way it should be. All of us hope this game will be a repeat of ours 30 years ago.”
Fans Make Their Picks For Super Bowl 50
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
On Sunday, February 7th, the National Football League will be celebrating its 50th Super Bowl in Santa Clara, Cal- ifornia. The game will be played at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.
This year, the Denver Bron- cos will be facing the Carolina Panthers for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Peyton Manning, quar- terback for the Broncos, will be trying to secure his second Super Bowl win as he faces the end of a record setting and Hall of Fame career.
Cam Newton, the outspo- ken quarterback of the Car- olina Panthers, will be trying to secure his team’s first Super Bowl win on their second at- tempt.
Fans in the area were asked who they picked to win Super Bowl 50. These are their selec- tions.
Andre Walker: “I’m a Denver fan,
because they
have a lot of
Florida play-
ers on their
team. I’m
not comfort-
able with Peyton at quarter- back.
“Although I’m leaning to- ward Denver, I feel Carolina may win. Cam Newton, in spite of his honesty and contro- versy he’s stirred up in the league, is an exceptional ath- lete, and if he wins, I’ll be happy.”
Anthony Minor: “I’m going with
the Broncos.
I’d like to
see Carolina
win, because
they’re in
our division.
But I honestly feel old school will prevail and teach the younger a lesson or two.”
Dee Jackson: “I’m pick-
ing Carolina.
I really like
Cam, and I
respect the
fact that he’s
been so hon-
est and out-
spoken about his place in the NFL as an African American quarterback. I like his energy and he always makes great de- cisions.
“He’s proven himself to be a great team leader, and I think he’s a better athlete than he is a quarterback.”
Willie Robinson: “I’m picking Car-
olina, be-
cause of their
record and
they have
proven
themselves
to be worthy of a champi- onship. Cam is the better quarterback, and I think Car- olina will win the game easily.”
Fred Hearns: “Cam and the Panthers
will win. This
is Cam’s
year and
Carolina’s
year. It
would be
nice to see Peyton Manning go out in a blaze of glory, but I don’t think the game will be close. Both defenses are good, but I’m taking Carolina by at least two scores.”
Albert “Buc-I-Fied Bert”
Owens: “I
so much
enjoy brag-
ging about
the fact that
the Bucca-
neers have a Super Bowl tro- phy and they don’t. I talk a lot of stuff and I’d like to keep my NFC South bragging rights.
“The Panthers came close in 2004, but didn’t get it done. I so much enjoy being able to put them (the Panthers) down, because they don’t have a Super Bowl.”
