High School Junior Wins Gold And The State Rowing Competition
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
The art of rowing is not a sport that many African Americans are drawn to. And, it is especially not a sport that African American girls par- ticipate in.
However, 16-year-old Taylor Bell is the exception to the rule. She recently captured the gold during a rowing competition.
Taylor is a high school junior who attends Tampa Preparatory. She is a member of the National Honor Society, 3-year Captain of the Tampa Prep Crew Team and she volunteers with the City of Tampa Homeless Count Initiative. She also volunteers each year as a youth camp counselor over the summer.
In what was probably the best 7 days she has had in high school,Tay- lor took Gold at the FSRA District Championships, she rows a one-per- son boat in the Light Weight Cate- gory. Seven days later, Taylor went on to win the State Championship in Sarasota.
She is now the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association, Women’s Scholastic Light Weight Single Cham-

pion. After competing, Taylor still found the energy to go to the Prom that same day.
Her father, Jeff Taylor said, “If you live in Tampa and have crossed the Hillsborough River and saw an African American rowing in a boat alone, there is a good chance it was Taylor. It is great to see there have been a good number of African Amer- ican girls who have joined the team over the past 2 seasons.
Taylor said, “I am very excited about winning. There are some very strong rowing schools in South Florida, but taking state was a goal of mine for two seasons. I could not have won without the support of my teammates and
coaches.”
Her father said
this is not the first state title Taylor has earned.
Prior to entering high school, Taylor was a budding Gym- nast and was the State of Florida Bars Champion for three
years in her level and age group. However, she was injured and could- n’t participate in that sport any more. But, she learned about rowing when she entered high school and decided to give a different activity a try. She decided on rowing because of her training in gymnastics.
When time allows, Taylor enjoys reading and she loves movies.
Taylor and her family, mother, Monique, father, Jeff, and younger sister, Makayla, are members of Hyde Park United Methodist Church. Both girls are active in the Youth Ministries Program.
She is currently focusing her edu- cation on Global Studies. Last month, she visited Peru with her school. While there, the students assisted with various building projects at a local school. The purpose of the trip was Cultural Immersion.
An honor student, Taylor earned a scholarship from her church that she plans to apply toward a mission trip to North Carolina this summer.
Bell said, “We are so very proud of her accomplishments and she is not done yet. With her work ethic you can expect some big things during her senior year as well.”
