Business Owner Hosts Special Day For Young Girls
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this month, Ms. Alicia Henry and a group of volunteers treated a group of girls to a special treat. The event was held on December 4th at the Jazzy Jewels Salon, 8631 Gunn Highway.
Each year since 2012, Ms. Henry has chosen in- dividuals as recipients of her giving back. One year, she worked with young women at the Alpha House.
This year, the recipients were 9 girls ranging in age between 3 and 11 years. For two hours, the little girls enjoyed a full makeover.
They enjoyed a day of pampering that included receiving shoes, dresses, hairdos, and received gifts to take with them. The gifts were provided by Ms. Co- lette Glover-Hannah, Ms. Janna Cantero, and others. Ms. Lindsey Meyer, of Meyer Inspira- tions Photography pro- vided the gift of a photo-shoot to each of the girls.
And, if that wasn’t enough, the young ladies showed off their hairstyles, dresses and shoes as they took part in the “Future Runway Models in their Princess outfits” segment of the event.

The excitement of opening gifts showed on the faces of these lit- tle girls.
Ms. Henry said they were prepared to work with between 10 and 15 girls, but fell short of their goals. The recipients were nominated for the affair via social media, she said.
“This was our way of giving back while building confidence in the girls and
inspiring them to become business owners.”
She opened the salon in 2010 and said it is perfect for both mothers and their daughters to visit. Addi- tionally, the salon is flexible in that they can offer the service off site and they do parties as well.
This is the first business that Ms. Henry has owned. Initially, she en- tered school to become a nurse. However, she changed her major and opened the salon, the mother of two sons said.
“I started doing my own
hair at the age of 4. After that, I would do hair of rel- atives if they came around and their hair wasn’t just right,” she said.
So she enrolled at Man- hattan Beauty School to ob- tain her certification and training.
The young ladies patiently sat for their hairdos in preparation of the “Future Runway Models” segment of the event.
