City Of Chicago Sues
Nipsey Hussle Reportedly Shot 6 Times Outside His Los Angeles Store
The Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was killed in a shooting outside his clothing store in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Two other men were shot, and a suspect remained at large.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Crisis Response Team confirmed the news on Sunday night, saying, "Today we lost a great musician, Nipsey Hussle." It said it was "consoling and offering support to the family."
Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot at Marathon Clothing in South Los Angeles at about 3:25 p.m. and pronounced dead at a hos- pital, police sources said. One of the other men was being treated at a hospital, and the third man declined treatment, Los Angeles police Lt. Chris Martinez said.
No other information was immediately available, but just a couple of hours before, Hus- sle, 33, whose real name was Ermias Ashgedom, had tweeted, "Having strong ene- mies is a blessing."
Los Angeles Police Com- missioner Steve Soboroff said Sunday night that he and Police Chief Michael Moore had been scheduled to meet with Hussle and repre-

sentatives of Roc Nation, Jay- Z's entertainment agency and production company, on Mon- day to "talk about ways he could help stop gang violence and help us help kids."
"I'm so very sad," Sobo- roff said on Twitter.
A large crowd of people, many of them crying, gathered at the scene on Sunday as po- lice and media helicopters whirred overhead.
Hussle's debut studio album, "Victory Lap," was nominated for Best Rap Album at this year's Grammy Awards.
Hussle was also an in- vestor in Vector 90, a co-work- ing space in South Central Los Angeles, where young people can take classes in science, technology and mathematics. He called the center a "bridge between Silicon Valley and the inner city," saying at last year's Afrotech conference that he hoped to expand to other cities, like Atlanta, Washing- ton and Baltimore.
In an interview last year with Forbes, Hussle said that as a youth, he'd fallen prey to the "ignorance and self-de- structiveness in the narrative that was pushed on us through music in our generation."
Those who knew him de- scribed Hussle as a pillar of the community.
The rapper owned several businesses on the block where he was shot, said 54-year-old Hyde Park resident Glenn Taylor, including a burger restaurant, a barbershop and a fish market. He was known to give jobs to residents who were struggling to get by, some of them homeless. He once gave a pair of shoes to every student at 59th Street Elemen- tary School. He also donated money to renovate the school’s playground and basketball courts.
Hip Hop Shattered By Nipsey Hussle's Shooting Death
News of Nipsey Hussle’s un- expected shooting death is rip- pling across the Hip Hop community. The Victory Lap architect was gunned down in front of his Los Angeles cloth- ing store on Sunday afternoon (March 31).
He was reportedly hit at least six times. In a disturbing video captured of the after- math, Nipsey appears to have a bullet wound in his head while emergency responders are delivering CPR. Although his condition was unknown shortly after the incident, he was ultimately pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Hip Hop, of course, is shat- tered by the turn of events and

many of his fellow artists have taken to social media to ex- press their shock, anger and sorrow.
Drake, Rihanna, J. Cole, Killer Mike, Wu-
Tang Clan, Chuck D, Phar- rell Williams, Ice Cube, Atmosphere, Meek Mill, Gucci Mane, Offset are just a sliver of those mourning the loss.
    Jussie Smollett For $130K
Over Alleged Hate Crime
The City of Chicago is report- edly suing the Empire actor for $130,000 over the time spent investigating his now-infamous hate crime, TMZreports. Offi- cials reportedly sent a letter of demand to Smollett earlier this week, but his legal team quickly rejected it, saying the only per- son owed for their pain and suf- fering is Jussie.
The back and forth has now erupted into a more serious matter, however. If the case ul- timately returns to court, a judge will have to decide whether the alleged attack was staged before determining whether Smollett is required to fork over any money. But this could work against the actor. Apparently, the judge would only have to rule that it was more than likely that Jussie faked the attack, which is a much lower standard of proof needed than if this were a crim- inal case.
And it gets worse. If a judge
JUSSIE SMOLLETT
were to rule the attack was fake, it gives Empire more motive to terminate Smollett's contract, despite the fact that the original charges from his criminal case were dropped. According to the law, the city's civil case could ac- tually collect three times the original asking price, which would tally up to $390,000.
So, this civil suit could prob- ably go in a million different di- rections. Let's see how Smollett and his team decide to play it.
