CDC Of Tampa, Inc., Continues Youth Programs During
 The Summer
Throughout the summer, the Corporation to Develop Communities Youth Leader- ship Summer Program has en- gaged students in life skills enhancing activities. The most popular, by far, brought a young entrepreneur, Tony Selvaggio, founder, eSmart Recycling and his colleague, Connie GeeAbate, Director of Strategic Alliances, together with the kids.
Each week, the pair has fo- cused on starting a business. The youth were split into groups of 4 to 6 and worked on their business ideas and pitch.
This week, Tony and Con- nie held a pitch competition at Kings Forest Recreation Cen- ter. Each group pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. The winning concept was rewarded $250 and each member of the team received a free laptop!
These computers have been refurbished by Tony, the core of his eSmart Recycling’s busi- ness.
Growing up, Selvaggio knew people who were mugged and almost killed over a cell phone. His thought process on refurbishing the computers was, “On one side of the coin, someone was ready to sell their trash; on the other, we have people dying for this stuff.”
The Youth Leadership Summer program is an effort of CDC of Tampa’s Youth Success Center. During the school year, the YSC works in middle and high schools in underserved communities in Hillsborough County to provide mentoring, tutoring, college application as- sistance and college field trips, expanding the horizons of those who participate in the program.
Ernest Coney, CEO and President of the Corporation to Develop Communities, Inc. be- lieves that the more opportuni- ties are presented to children, positive outcomes emerge for the students, their families and their communities.
