Tampa Bay Juneteenth Coalition News
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commem- orating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was June 19th, 1865 when the State of Texas was notified that the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. President Abraham Lin- coln had actually ended slavery two and a half years prior to the Texas slaves being notified.
To date, Juneteenth is celebrated by many groups around the world to com- memorate this historic event. The Tampa Bay Juneteenth Coalition is one such group.
The coalition was birthed with the idea of unifying with other groups to pursue a common goal. That goal is to bring attention to our efforts in seeing Juneteenth become a national holiday.
REV. DR. RONALD MYERS ...Guest Speaker, Awards Banquet
The coalition has part- nered with Rev. Willie G. Dixon of the COACH’s Foundation and Eddie Adams, who chairs the 100 Black Men Luncheon each year.
A month of celebrations
have been planned for this event. To highlight the signif- icance of Juneteenth, The Tampa Bay Juneteenth Coalition proudly announces the visit of Rev. Dr. Ronald Myers, who is the National President of the Juneteenth Foundation. Dr. Myers will fly in from Wash- ington, D. C. and make an appearance at our celebra- tions. He will be the Guest Speaker at the awards ban- quet. The celebrations in- clude a Youth Summit, a 100 Black Men Luncheon, a “Miss Juneteenth” pageant, an awards banquet, and will conclude at the end of the month with a street festival. Vendors are welcomed.
