The ceremony involved the renaming of University Place in honor of the husband of former Tampan, Beverly Dixon Wade. The house is now named, the Donald Carlye Wade House. This distinction was rendered in view of Wade's outstanding and impressive career at the University as the Executive Director of the SU National Alumni Federation.
Wade's career spanned over 34 years. Some of his achievements included rapid expansion of chapters by 150% within 5 years, establishment and dedication of plans for the construction of a new alumni center on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, and raising the largest funds in the history of the University at the National Alumni Conference held in Houston, TX in 2002.
He is also credited with creating the Miss Bayou Classic Pageant and the Annual Alumni Roundup during his career at Southern University. He was the recipient of nu- merous awards.
At his retirement, he was bestowed the title, SU Alumni Executive Director Emeritus. The house named in his honor was initially designed by the students in the College of Engineering at Southern. The dedication ceremony was held during the celebration of Founders' Day at Southern University where other activities took place.
Wade's life expired in 2012 and he leaves to cherish his memories his immediate family, Dr. Beverly Dixon Wade (widow), a son, granddaughter and four great grand- children.
