Local
Comedian Sheryl Underwood To Appear At The Improv
On August 12th and 13th, comedian Sheryl Underwood will be appearing at the Tampa Improv Comedy The- ater, 1600 8th Avenue in Ybor City.
With two shows Fri- day (7 p. m. and 10:30 p. m., and one Saturday at 7:30 p. m.), Ms. Un- derwood hopes every- one comes out and enjoy a great night of comedy. She does re- mind everyone this is adult comedy.
Ms. Underwood
was born in Cabot, Arkansas, and said her family later moved to Pine Bluff, then Little Rock.
“I remember return- ing to Arkansas after I’d left for a while, and dis- covering we were from Cabot, Arkansas, a small city of about 26,000 people.
“I think we’ve come a long way since then, be- cause we knew there were things we couldn’t do there because of the racial climate. I love being southern, and I

love my southern ac- cent.”
Ms. Underwood
said when it comes to family, her mother al- ways had a hustle and her stepmother was a seamstress.
“I think I picked up something from both of them. My dad believed in working hard and cel- ebrating. He always wanted me to be an ed- ucated person, and my show is a reflection of my family.
“I picked up my love for raunchy comedy from eaves dropping during the parties my parents had. We’d
sneak and listen to
Rudy Ray Moore, Richard Pryor, LaWanda Page, Moms Mabley, and others.”
Ms. Underwood is proud to be a member of a new generation of female comedians who all came up on Def Comedy Jam with the idea of being more sex- ual.
“As far as whether or not I write my own ma- terial, nothing new under the sun. You hear so much from the older comedians, and they were the best jokes. What I write is a point of view.
“I’d like nothing bet- ter than to get some of my family members on stage. I started out as a singer and dancer, but I wasn’t that great a dancer, and although I can sing, my voice was too deep. Joke telling was my best talent, so I stuck with it. I’ve also learned it’s important to laugh at yourself some- times.”

BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Friday, August 12th, at 10 p.m., mem- bers of the community will gather at Dubai Nightclub, 3849 North Dale Boulevard, for the release party of “Street Dreamz.” The movie is based on a true story that focuses on the life of a drug dealer.
Micah Jackson,
one of about 30 local ac- tors used to create the movie plays the part of a hit man who eventually gets killed himself. “The movie is about a young man who moves from New York to Florida and gets involved in the drug business. He goes on and gets deeper in drugs, but he also loves music. Ultimately, he does pick music.
“But the message in the movie is that young people might thing drugs are all glamorous, but this movie shows the other side. It lets kids see that the streets are not a joke and that

the other side is jail or death.”
Author Tony Wil- son, owner of Samson’s Café, of Tampa, created the movie based on a true story. Wilson’s book bearing the same name is scheduled for release in October.
