Grand Opening Celebration Announced For Cuscaden Pool
COUNCILMAN FRANK REDDICK
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Councilman Frank Reddick his colleagues, and city officials, were able to get $1.3 million to repair the pool at Williams Park. It took 4 years, but on July 22, 2013, the pool reopened.
Councilman Reddick
then focused his attention on the pool at historic Cuscaden Park. In 2005, the city spent $2.5 million to repair the leak- ing pool. By 2009, the pool was leaking again, and it was closed.
Councilman Reddick
remained steadfast, and again convinced his colleagues and city officials to set aside $3.1 million to repair the leaking structure, and give it a lining
that would guarantee it would- n’t leak again for another two decades at least.
On Saturday, August 13th, Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Councilman Reddick and other elected officials will have the grand reopening of the pool at 2900 North 15th Street.
At 10 a.m., there will be a big celebration to showcase the renovated pool, and everyone is invited to come out and enjoy themselves.
“Know this project is finally complete makes me feel good,” said Councilman Reddick.
“The dream so many chil- dren had of whether the pool would open again has come true. It’s great for the kids and the community.”
Councilman Reddick
said he had some doubts at first, because of the cost factor, and the original $2.5 that had
been spent, but the job didn’t get done.
“I didn’t know if the city would reinvest the dollars to get it done,” said Council- man Reddick.
“I think what convinced my colleagues was when I let them visually see what kind of con- dition the pool was in.”
Councilman Reddick
said he wishes officials had pursued the original contrac- tors who messed up the proj- ect, and ran off with the money.
“I made sure that wouldn’t happen again. There’s a clause in the contract that will protect the pools from cracking after they drain the water when the summer is over.
“I’d like to see all of the city’s pools protected from cracking.”
