Tiffany Greene To Do Play-By-Play For College Sports
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
She’ll be covering many of the HBCU games.
Tampa native, Tiffany Greene (Berry) has been named Play-By-Play An- nouncer for college sports, covering many Historically Black Colleges and Universi- ties (HBCUs) sporting events. She’ll add another first to her list of accomplish- ments. She’s the first African-American woman college football play-by-play announcer. Greene will team up with Jay Walker (analyst) calling many of
ESPN's Black college games on Thursday nights.
“It’s a tremendous oppor- tunity that I have been preparing and praying for this for some time and now that it is here, I just can't wait to get started.
“While I am looking for- ward to being one of the voices for college football, I'm also thrilled to have a chance to inspire young Black boys and girls who as- pire to be a Commentator or work in sports broadcasting.
“My husband, family and friends have been a wonder- ful village in helping me fur- ther my dream,” she said.
That village includes hus-
Hillsborough High School IB Program. And, while in high school, she was a student writer for The Sentinel.
Although right now, FAMU is not on her list of games to cover, she’ll be pre- pared for Walker when his alma mater takes on another Florida HBCU, Bethune- Cookman University on Sept. 22nd, 10:30 p. m. on ESPNU.
“There will plenty of op- portunities to talk about how FAMU fits into the HBCU football landscape this sea- son. FAMU is an intriguing storyline with first year head coach Willie Simmons in- jecting new life into the pro- gram. The fans and alumni are excited and have great expectations for what is to come,” she said.
Many of the games to air are from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and South Western Athletic Conference (SWAC). The pair will also cover the Wild- card games. Most of her foot- ball, volleyball, basketball and softball games have been on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and the SEC Network.
Preparing for the games is no easy task. Just hearing her talk about Saturday’s up- coming game lets you know that a lot of time is spent studying statistics, learning the players (and their back- grounds) and talking with the coaches.
Greene did play-by-play in 2015 for ESPN. The year prior, she was the network's sideline reporter, covering through Bright House Sports Network in previous years. She became a fulltime ESPN reporter in 2015.
Greene and Walker will cover the Prairie View A&M/North Carolina Cen- tral game on Sunday, Sept. 2, 12 noon on ESPN2.
band, Aaron Berry, her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dayle (Patsy) Greene and her husband’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. George (Lo) Berry, among others, who lend helping hands to care for 17-month-old, Bryson.
The ESPN Sportscaster will start off the football sea- son on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 6 p. m., with a high school football game be- tween Tucker and Grayson, both of Metro Atlanta, Geor- gia. According to Ms. Greene, both schools boast two state championships and this season all the talk is about the Grayson Rams. “It's an interesting matchup and everyone can tune in Saturday night at 6 pm on ESPNU,” she said.
Greene is a 4th genera- tion FAMU alum, and Walker graduated from Howard University. The pair will cover HBCU Sports on various ESPN Networks.
