Tampa Police Department Offers Community Grant
The Tampa Police Depart- ment is utilizing seized drug money and contraband to fund its Community Invest- ment Grant.
For the second year, qualified non-profit organiza- tions can apply online for the grant between June 3 and July 31.
Potential grant applicants can tune in to the depart- ment's podcast "Role Call with Chief Brian Dugan" every Wednesday in June to gain an edge on the applica- tion process. The weekly pod- cast series will highlight the work of the 2018 grant recipients and how the four organizations used the grant to make a difference in Tampa.
The goal of the Commu- nity Investment Grant is to provide assistance to non- profit organizations that are engaged in projects or pro- grams that benefit Tampa cit- izens.
The Chief and his staff will award four grants, totaling $10,000 to local charitable or-
ganizations in September. “This community grant opportunity has the potential to inspire organizations to think of new ways that they can help prevent crime in our neighborhoods,” Chief
Dugan said.
“We also recognize that
some organizations are just simply in need of dollars to continue programs that make sense from a public safety standpoint."
Organizations must have a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) desig- nation in order to apply for the Community Invest- ment Grant. They also have to meet additional criteria, which includes using the awarded funds in a manner that supports the police department's mission to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life through a cooperative part- nership with all citizens.
The application along with additional information about the Community Investment Grant is available online at: Tampagov.net/Police/TPD-
and the roles they each play in making a difference in our community.
This storytelling experi- ence is unique in the field of law enforcement, and just one of the ways Chief Dugan is showing his commitment to strengthening police-commu- nity relationships.
During the entire month of June, the police department plans to feature last year’s Community Investment Grant
recipients on Role Call. Resi- dents will be able to learn about their roles in the com- munity, and gain some useful information and tips to help with this year’s grant submis- sion process.

Billionaire Who Vowed To Pay Off Morehouse Students’ Loan Debt Creates Paid Internship Program
Robert F. Smith, the bil- lionaire who blessed hundreds of 2019 Morehouse grads with the gift of promising to pay off their student loan debt, has now created a paid internship program for students.
The prolific businessman now aims to help at least 1,000 students through Intern X, a paid internship of at least 8 weeks that introduces students to opportunities in STEM-re- lated positions, according to its website.
Students can gain experi- ence working for companies in the financial, marketing, soft- ware, not-for-profit and real es- tate sectors, like AT&T, Price Waterhouse Cooper, Deloitte, Citi and Vista Equity Partners.
Smith is looking to connect with students who represent ethnically underrepresented groups who are rising sopho- mores and have at least a 2.8 GPA.
The program is an extension of Smith’s Fund II Foundation. Smith is paying it forward after vowing to pay off the stu- dent loan debts accumulated by
hundreds of Morehouse grads. The generous billionaire tech investor was this year’s commencement speaker, and made the shocking announce-

ment.
“My family is going to create
a grant to eliminate your stu- dent loans. You great More- house men are bound only by the limits of your own convic- tion and creativity,” Smith told the crowd of students, parents and supporters in Atlanta.
The announcement drew a standing ovation and chants of “MVP! MVP!” from the audi- ence.
“When Dr. King said that the ‘arc of the moral universe bends toward justice,’ he wasn’t saying it bends on its own ac- cord. It bends because we choose to put our shoulders into it together and push,” Smith said during his speech.
