Michael B. Jordan On ‘Fantastic Four’ Casting Backlash:
I’ll ‘Shoulder All This Hate’
Michael B. Jordan is re- sponding to a backlash after being cast as Johnny Storm in the Friday’s Opening “Fan- tastic Four” reboot. The an- nouncement created a stir from fans of the comic book franchise, originally created by Stan Lee.
“You’re not supposed to go on the Internet when you’re cast as a superhero,” Jordan wrote in a short essay for En- tertainment Weekly. As he mentions in the article, his comic character was origi- nally described as having blond hair and blue eyes.
“I didn’t want to be igno- rant about what people were saying,” he wrote. “Turns out this is what they were saying: ‘A black guy? I don’t like it. They must be doing it be- cause Obama’s president’ and ‘It’s not true to the comic.’ Or even, ‘They’ve de- stroyed it!'”
Months later, the new Human Torch says that the negative comments no longer bother him. “Some people may look at my casting as po-

litical correctness or an at- tempt to meet a racial quota, or as part of the year of ‘Black Film.’ Or they could look at it as a creative choice by the di- rector, Josh Trank, who is in an interracial relationship himself — a reflection of what a modern family looks like today.”
Jordan also said he hopes to be a game-changer for Hol- lywood’s portrayal of comic book superheroes in the fu- ture.
“Sometimes you have to be
the person who stands up and says, ‘I’ll be the one to shoul- der all this hate. I’ll take the brunt for the next couple of generations.’ I put that re- sponsibility on myself. People are always going to see each other in terms of race, but maybe in the future we won’t talk about it as much.”
Miles Teller, Jamie Bell and Kate Mara also star in the film, directed by Josh Trank. “Fantastic Four” hits theaters (today) on August 7.
In 1917, the Ritz Theater opened in Ybor City. In 1930, the historical building ex- panded, and after a two-year vacation, thanks to the Capi- tano family, the building has undergone a $750,000 facelift.
In an effort to bring a vari- ety of entertainment to the the- ater, every February “Dre Day” was held with a party and a West Coast Dr. Dre Theme, in- cluding Dre beats, Dre cos- tumes, and Dre photo booths.
This September, the first- ever “Bey Day” will come to the
Ritz, celebrating all things Be- yonce. The first show will be on September 3rd, a day before Beyonce’s 34th birthday.
There will be live tribute acts, and videos features Bey- once, Destiny’s Child and Jay Z. There will also be spe- cialty cocktails served with names like “Drunk In Love,” Bootylicious,” and others, and prizes for single ladies, along with a Tampa Bay Fashion Week dress contest. There will also be a Beyonce birthday cake and more.
