Local
Bucs Name Doug Williams, Mike Alstott As Ring
Of Honor Inductees
Seminar Hopes To Introduce More Women To Golf
For the first time since the process began in 2009, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be enshrining two former players into their “Ring of Honor.”
Doug
Williams, the
first quarter-
back to lead the
Buccaneers to
the playoffs and
Mike Alstott,
the fullback who
still holds the team’s franchise record for touchdowns, are this year’s honorees.
In the five seasons Williams spent with the Buccaneers, he took them to three play- off appearances, and said he didn’t feel snubbed that he was part of the first duo to be named to the Ring.
Alstott will be officially inducted at half- time of the Bucs October 4th home game against the Carolina Panthers and Williams will be enshrined at halftime of the December 6th game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Tampa resident Albert Perry has been a Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Doug Williams fan since the beginning, and never got over the way Williams was treated in Tampa.
“I’ve been shouting how outraged every- one should have been when Doug was let go. I’ve never stopped showing my anger, and when he continued to be passed over for the Ring of Honor, I got even more upset.”
That’s when Perry took it upon himself to take action and demand Williams be en- shrined in the Ring of Honor.
“I started by trying to visit One Buc Place, and that didn’t work. Then I sent letters to the owners of the team and the NFL, de- manding Williams be enshrined. That did- n’t work either.
MIKE ALSTOTT
“A few years ago, I came up with the idea of circulating a petition and sending it to the NFL and the owners to let them know how the fans felt. That also didn’t change any- thing.”
Perry said what he’s learned through this process is sometimes you just have to be patient.
“I understand the importance of being patient, but in my opinion, Doug should have been put into the Ring of Honor before a lot of the players who were enshrined be- forehim.
“I think he did more for the city and the team than any quarterback before or since has done. He was the team’s first franchise quarterback, and we let him go.”
Perry said now that they have inducted Williams into the Ring of Honor, he feels justice has been served, and he’s starting to feel like a real Buccaneer fan again.
“I’ve waited a long time for this day, and I’m excited. Although it was long overdue, at least they did it and I’m happy about that.
“I only wish Doug had stayed and brought the first Super Bowl trophy to the organization. But he went on to the Wash- ington Redskins and not only won a Super Bowl, but made history.”
MISHONDRA KEY “Queen”
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Mishondra Key (Queen) wasn’t interested in golf, but being a person of ad- venture and opportunity, she always likes to try different things.
“I enjoy people and I enjoy helping and serving and pass- ing on the good Word. It’s one of my ways of ministering.”
Four years ago, Queen was introduced to golf after listen- ing to a friend talk to her about his day on the course.
“At that time I had no idea what a Par, birdie or bogie meant or what an 80 score meant. So, I got the “Book for Dummies on Golf,” and started reading. Then I was told I couldn’t learn the game of golf
by reading a book. I was told I had to go out and do it, and that’s exactly what I did.
“I started out at Rogers Park with Lionel Ballard, and Melvin Blair was my in- structor. I was the only woman in the class with pastors, exec- utives and others. In the end, I did better than most of them.”
Queen said she began to notice there were very few women playing golf in the area, and she wants to see more women enjoying the sport.
“I’ve found golf to be a stress reliever, and just an op- portunity to be outside. I’ve also done a lot of traveling since I started playing.
“I’d really love to see more African American women play- ing golf. I think more women would love it because they would find it as challenging as I do.”
That’s when Queen de- cided to organize a seminar, or Golf Clinic For Women called “Queens On The Green.”
“We will have a profes- sional golf instructor and there will be breakfast, raffles, and a chance to win free golf les- sons.”
The seminar will be held June 6th from 9 a. m. until 11 a. m. at the Hunter’s Green Country Club, 18101 Longwa- ter Run Drive.
