The Gospel Legends Are Preparing For 7th Anniversary
   TAMPA BAY GOSPEL LEGENDS
 BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
It has been 7 years now since Deacon and Mrs. John (Marie) Miller came up with the idea of recognizing “old-time” gospel singers – quartets and groups. Their idea was to not lose the gospel singing that they were used to, that had been around 50+ years.
The couple reached out
to the community and were more than overwhelmed by learning that there were others who felt as they did. From that point, the Tampa Bay Gospel Legends were formed. They’ve been shar- ing “old-time” gospel music throughout the city and have even traveled out of state.
Now, they are preparing for the 7th Anniversary Quartet Reunion to honor the quartet singers who are
still standing and working together in unity and love.
The reunion will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019, 5 p. m., at St. John Cathe- dral, 3401 Bishop Eddie Newkirk Way (25th Ave.). Dwight Newkirk is Pas- tor.
“The Gospel Legends are so thankful to be able to spread old-time gospel through song and the peo- ple are still enjoying them,” Mrs. Marie Miller said.
This service will be ded- icated to Legends still standing. Some of them are: Earl Mosley and the Spiritual Wonders, Gene Bell, Minister George Harris, Ethel Pittman, Pastor Edith Langston, Wilson Robertson. M. C. John- son, and the Heavenly Trumpets, to name a few.
Invited back this year as special guest will be the Gospel Imperials of Huntsville, AL. Also ap- pearing will be Brothers of Harmony, St. Peters-
burg; The Harmony Winds, The Exciting Gospel Warriors, Pas- tor Calvin (Pee Wee) Callins, MC; and a surprise guest from Georgia, Mrs. Miller said.
“We need the support of the community to make this reunion a great success. We’re looking to see all of you and the young quartet singers,” she said.

Tampa’s Allen Temple AME Church Honoring School Custodians
School Custodians are invited to worship on Sunday, May 19th
Custodians are not only su- perheroes to kids, but beloved members of our community. Custodians from schools across Hillsborough County will be honored with the Allen Temple Excellence Award, recognizing the contributions that custodians make to public health in their schools, com- munities, and to the profession at large.
“School custodians are re- sponsible for more than just sweeping the floors, cleaning lunch rooms, and turning off the lights at the end of the day,” said Delano Stewart, Steward Emeritus at Allen Temple AME Church, and re- tired attorney.

by our custodians, he is re- minded of how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for sanitation workers in Mem- phis just before his untimely assassination.
Henry “Shake” Wash- ington, a retired area superin- tendent for Hillsborough Public Schools and a Trustee at the church says, “These un- sung heroes contribute to stu- dent learning by creating a safe, clean, and healthy envi- ronment for students every day. They play an important role in helping to create great

public schools for every stu- dent. Custodians deserve to be treated with dignity and fair- ness.”
The event recognizing cus- todians within the school dis- trict will take place on Sunday, May 19, 2019, during the 11 a. m. service in the Allen Temple AME Church Sanctuary. A light reception will follow the ceremony.
If you or someone you know would like to be recog- nized, please call the church @ 813-229-1438 or emails us at info@allentempletampa.org.
