   President-Elect Named To Head USF
BY KENYA WOODARD Sentinel Feature Writer
The search for the next president of the University of South Florida came to an end Friday, with the Board of Trustees naming Steve Currall to the position.
Currall – currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist Univer- sity (SMU) – was approved unanimously by the Board after he and three other fi- nalists completed days of in- terviews and community meetings among the univer- sity’s three campuses.
The Board of Governors – which oversees the state university system – will vote this week on Currall’s hire.
He succeeds outgoing president, Judy Genshaft, who is retiring after 19 years. If confirmed by the governors, Currall begins work on July 1.
Before selecting Currall as president-elect, the Board first approved a compensa- tion study that included set- ting the range for the base pay between $550,000 and $600,000, a performance bonus between $250,000 and $300,000, and deferred compensation that accrues annually, and relocation and

automobile expenses.
After the vote, Board
President, Brian Lamb described Currall’s selec- tion after an “intense process” as “monumental”.
“I think what you just saw was a testament to this Board,” he said. “You saw... thinking around the best de- cision for this university.”
Other finalists include Wanda Blanchett, in- terim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at Rutgers Univer- sity’s New Brunswick cam- pus; Debasish (Deba) Dutta - distinguished pro- fessor of engineering and former chancellor at Rut- gers University’s New
Brunswick campus; and Jeffrey Vitter, a distin- guished professor of com- puter and information science and former chancel- lor at the University of Mis- sissippi.
Currall previously worked at the University of California’s Davis campus as the chancellor’s senior advi- sor for strategic projects and initiatives and dean of the graduate school of manage- ment. Currall also was vice chair of the board of direc- tors and member of the ex- ecutive committee for the 10-campus University of California system's Global Health Institute.
He also has held posi- tions at Rice University, the University of Chicago, and Cornell University, and was a vice dean at the University College London.
In his remarks, Currall said he was “thrilled” to be part of the university and move it forward.
“I am humbled and ex- cited to lead the University of South Florida into its next era,” he said.
For Currall, that in- cludes a pending consolida- tion of the university’s Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and Tampa campuses, maintaining its preemi- nence status, and expanding its research opportunities.
Board members have stated the above as priorities for the next president.
USF President Gens- haft – who led an extended standing ovation for Cur- rall and his wife, Cheyenne after the Board’s vote – said the uni- versity’s attainment of pre- eminence and other accomplishments offer a sturdy foundation for the next leader.
Cheyenne Currall is the current vice president and executive advisor for global advancement at Uni- versity of Texas Southwest- ern Medical Center.
“These are the elements of the university that Cur- rall and his wife will build upon,” she said.
President Genshaft
said she would ensure a smooth transition for Cur- rall.
