Precious Lord, Take My Hand
BY CARLTON BURGESS Thomas A. Dorsey, the
undisputed ‘Father of Gospel Music,’ was not exempt from the tragic events of life.
At a young age, he received a call while away from his lovely wife who was expecting their baby boy. Dorsey was anxious and apprehensive about leav- ing his wife alone, but with her urging didn't pass up an op- portunity to share his original gospel hymns with the annual National Baptist Convention.
He was barely gone a couple

of days when the call came say- ing his wife had become seri- ously ill and was being rushed to the colored folk hospital. He did not make it in time to say goodbye to his wife who passed away. His baby boy did not
survive.
Out of this tremendously
bleak hour came the infamous lyrics, Precious Lord, take my hand........This hymn remains Dorsey's most popular com- position and is recognized around the world in many lan- guages.
